Break In and Out T.O. 1983-1985

 


This is a short documentary about the rise & fall of the breaking scene in Canada between 1983-1985. “Break In and Out The Canadian Rise and Fall of Breaking” focuses on the Toronto area during this time period with interviews from a few individuals from various 80’s crews. Members from Zodiac Crew (Toronto), Cold Crush (Toronto), Break Masters (Toronto), Magnetic Rockers (Mississauga) Miggy B (Toronto) describes the atmosphere when breaking exploded onto the Canadian scene from the United States and provides in their opinion some factors as to why breaking took a hiatus starting around 1985.

“Break In and Out” one of three presentations… was created and presented by Robin (Rocabye) Coltez of Fat Laces, for “Primary Source Documenting, Archiving, Preserving Local Hip Hop Histories” an event held on November 30th, 2012 at Manifesto Lower Studio in Toronto. Presented by Manual Labour, Manifesto and York University.

Other presenters were Dr. Mary Fogarty an Assistant Professor of Dance at York University. Her presentation focused on the value and impact of underground b-boy/b-girl videos on the local Toronto history in the 1990s.
The last presenter was Andrew “Andycapp” Hicks a multi-talented DJ/Community Art Promoter/Filmmaker who just finished his M.A. in Global Film Cultures. His presentation focused on alternative media spaces, technologies and various cultural art practices of the lower East Side, South Bronx and Times Square and how these elements might be used as inspiration for future collaborative work in Toronto.
